The dacite sample was known to have been formed from a magma flow, and so its actual age was an established fact. Austin submitted the sample for radiometric dating to an independent laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The results came back dating the rock to , years old, with certain compounds within it as old as 2. Austin’s conclusion is that radiometric dating is uselessly unreliable.

This provides a unique opportunity to test the accuracy of this commonly used method of dating rocks, because we know exactly when this volcanic rock was formed.
No speculation or guesswork is needed, based on the supposed ages of particular fossils or superimposed sedimentary rock. Potassium-argon dating is used by geologists to determine the ages of igneous rocks rocks solidified from a molten state. So this method can be used to date volcanic rocks, such as the dacite lava dome on Mount St Helens.

This decay is very slow — so slow that it has a half-life of 1, million years the half-life is the time taken for half the radioactive potassium isotope to decay to argon.

In the past two months or so the dome-shaped formation of rock in the crater has been developing a large bulge, and frequent plumes of gas have been seen rising from the crater. These are clear signs of volcanic activity and they are very similar to what was seen before the eruptions of Latest reports tell of a steam plume rising passively and drifting south and south-westward over the crater rim. The plume occasionally contains minor ash, which falls in the crater and on the southern flank of the volcano, darkening the new snow.
Seismic activity remains low compared to that observed earlier, and is consistent with a slow but continuous rise of magma driving up the crater floor and feeding a surface extrusion of lava. The overall low rates of seismicity and gas emission suggest that the lava reaching the surface does not contain much gas.
